2. LONDON DIARY
- Warning: Bad Words Coming Up

----------------------------------------

Yanks, Krauts, Frogs, Jocks, Wops and Dagos. Chinkies, Ities, Nips, Niggers
and Pakis. In celebration of St George’s Day and ‘Big’ Ron Atkinson, we
launch a campaign to save the good old English xenophobic and racist
epithet.

‘Big’ Ron resigned from his TV commentator job this week after being heard
to say two of the above words – nigger and wop – in relation to Chelsea’s
black defender Marcel Desailly and Italian manager Claudio Ranieri.

The words Atkinson used and the others at the top of this bit are beyond the
pale these days and rightly so and were only there to make kind readers sit
up and take notice. For you half asleep lot at the back - there’s not really
any kind of St George-backed campaign either. The dragon-slayer died in 1061
for one thing.

But the trouble with words is that they don’t exist in a universe of the own
– they usually relate to some other thing or feeling. You can ban words but
their meanings will simply come back in a different form. ‘Frogs’ for
instance is nowadays considered bad form but a lot of people like saying
‘Cheese eating surrender monkeys’ thanks to The Simpsons.

But, even when used with angry voice by halfwits, the good thing about The
Simpsons’ line is that its wit and length take the nasty sting out of the
older terms and makes the whole idea of stereotyping sound a bit ridiculous
so lets have more of these in the future. This leak-eating sheep-shagger
wishes all you work-shirking e-mail time-wasters a good weekend.

MUSIC
http://www.londonnet.co.uk/ln/out/music/

- Gig Highlights:
Massive Attack @ Brixton Academy

Thurs, 8 July, 7 p.m., UKP27.50 + fees
Massive Attack's hypnotically slower-but-danceable beats have been going for
20 years, as the band's members were mystifying club audiences in their
native Bristol with their intense and offbeat sound system and DJ sets. Any
bands in the area trying to compete with them had no chance, and as a
consequence, Massive Attack is the biggest act to come out of Bristol. The
band's influence can be seen in the jazzy, bluesy trip-hop tangents of
fellow Bristol act Portishead, but Massive Attack's music embodies so much
more than just blues, jazz and trip-hop. Funk, punk and hip-hop have all
snaked their ways in and out of Massive Attack's repertoire, allowing the
band to grow and evolve, not only with the trends, but to define them as
well. Even if you're not familiar with their more widely known tracks
(Unfinished Sympathy, Teardrop, Inertia Creeps), you're more than likely
familiar with the acid jazz sounds that even with slow beats can have you
moving. http://www.londonnet.co.uk/ln/out/music/rockpoptickets.html

50 Cent @ Wembley Arena
Sat, 28th August 2004 , UKP27.50 plus fees

With his colourful past, 50's name has appears throughout the media, making him one of the most discussed figure in the industry. Is it all hype? Well, maybe you should check the man out at this sure-to-be-hot Wembley gig.

Renaissance at The Cross, Saturday 24th April
- The Goods Yard, York Way, Kings Cross, London (10pm - 6am, Admission UKP 15)
April at Renaissance plays host to a truly international line-up, taking in artists from America, the Far East and mainland Europe! Although Tom Stephan now resides in London, he originally hails from New York, its distinct and famed underground sound remaining a clear influence on his own 'Superchumbo' style. A twisted fusion of tribal beats and haunting sounds, comprised from his own incredible productions and network of friends and producers.

Making a welcome return is Aldrin who has been featured on Radio 1's prestigious Essential Mix to critical acclaim. His residence at Zouk means he only gets the opportunity to reach these shores twice a year, so definitely one not to miss! Rounding out the Main Arch is the debut of 2 producers and DJs who are hotly tipped for the top - Spain's Chus & Ceballos. Their own productions and remixes are becoming the stuff of legend and are as eagerly anticipated as material from Deep Dish, Tenaglia and Morales, all of whom they count amongst their many fans.

In the Middle Arch Mark Wilkinson returns for another 6 hours of house mayhem. He will be showcasing his most recent track alongside further material from one of his many productions and signings from his own record label, Kidology. Described as the 'don of future funk', a title he continues to live up to. In the Intimate Arch things will be going with an eclectic swing with DJ sets from Schmoov! and Kid Circus.

4. HOTELS
----------------------------------------

LONDON
http://www.londonnet.co.uk/ln/guide/resources/hotel-shop.html

Following a lull in leisure and business travel after September 11th 2001 London's hotels are now at their busiest since the first quarter of 2000 says a new report by Deloitte. "It is more intra-European an Far Eastern, but Americans will come back" Deloitte's Marvin Rust told the FT this week.

This inevitably means that rates are soon to toughen as hotels edge prices back up to capitalise on the boom. That said there are still many bargains to be had, for example The Ritz still provides our readers with hefty discounts on regular rooms and suites at almost half price. At the lower end of the price scale The Columbia and Chelsea Lodge hotels offer double rooms from UKP83 and UKP55 respectively.

Dear LondonNet,

This is certainly the best London Cinema site. However, one added piece of information that would be of great assisistance is the screen size. Some of the screens in the West End are merely "club" screens which offer no advantage over watching a movie on a home cinema system. It would help in selecting a cinema when you want that big screen experience.

Bob Parsons

REPLY: Thanks for the email and sorry for the delay in replying. Sounds like a good idea as I too feel a little cheated when I pay the same money for a small screen in a mulitplex. As you'll probably know the big two screens in Leicester Square are The Odeon and The Empire. Aside from that we'll have to have a look into to if and how we can compile and present this info. (Ed).
