- Love Letters

THESE days of email, faxes and text messages, what comes through the letterbox every morning isn’t as important as it once was.

Roughly 99 per cent of my post is from someone who thinks I want to enter a competition to win a new kitchen appliance. The other one per cent is for the people who used to live here and going by the envelope they, too, were felt by the kitchen-angel to be in dire need of new white goods equipment.

The rise of other forms of communication and developments within Royal Mail make it unlikely a daily post will survive that much longer and with it the daily visit of the post man or woman.

I conducted a little survey on this impending loss among friends and the results may shock – it seems women have a bizarre sexual attraction to postmen. They didn’t say so explicitly, but I think it’s fair to make such a deduction from the findings that four of the five women I asked said they knew the name of their postie and would miss his occasional banter. None of the six men involved could name their post-person. One said he suspected his of being a ‘lazy git’ while another believed ‘deliveries are made automatically, nowadays aren’t they?’ whatever that might mean.

I always thought the stories of postmen enjoying the intimate favours of their women customers were urban myths but it seems I have led a sheltered life. My advice, therefore, for all those lonely men starting out on yet another new year crippled by extreme sexual frustration, is to beg for a job as a postman while you can. In return for that tip, could you tell your new colleagues, thanks, but honestly I don’t want a new fridge-freezer, even if it does come with the latest integral ice-making technology.

What's New?
Jailhouse Rock @ Piccadilly Theatre
, from 26 March 2004
Based on Elvis' 1957 classic, Jailhouse Rock tells the tale of Vince Everett who while serving hard time behind bars discovers his unique talent for music and goes on to become the greatest rock 'n' roll star the world has ever seen. However, money and fame don't bring the happiness he expects and the pressure of stardom weighs heavily on his shoulders. The classic rock 'n' roll musical has been adapted for the stage by the team behind Buddy and 125th Street, Alan Janes and Rob Bettison, and will combine Elvis' top tunes with other hit songs from the era that chart the birth and growth of rock 'n' roll.

Rock and Pop

- Gig Highlight:
Basement Jaxx, Brixton Academy

Fri, 19th March 2004, 7.00 PM
Tickets: from UKP20.00 plus fees
The masters of dance eclecticism return to their home turf following December's four-points-of-the-compass mini-tour of London in support of latest album 'Kish Kash'. 1999's 'Remedy' album is still one of the most consistently listenable dance albums of the last five years. The follow up 'Rooty' (named after the underground club nights they ran in a dodgy Irish pub in Brixton) was a suitable successor for their mixed up stylings. Anyone who has seen the Jaxx's live sets of the past knows these boys can put on a stage show as blissed out as their tunes. All bets are suspended though on exactly what hedonistic delights they've got in store for us at this home date.

- Cinderella, ENB
Got a chance to see Michael Corder's award-winning production of Cinderella just before Christmas. Created for English National Ballet in 1996, this production of Prokofiev's score was splendidly executed. Erina Takahashi as Cinders was surefooted and sublime. A treat for all ages.

Dear LondonNet,

Re: Diana Death.

I believe very strongly that Princess Diana and Dodi were assassinated by the 'firm'. I don't want to believe that Prince Charles instigated the crash, but feel that certain members of the Royal family would if only to protect the monarchy. I feel that they and certain other people were very worried at Diana's popularity and her unpredictability. There are so many glaringly unanswered questions. Why did it take so long for them to get her to hospital?. Why no open casket? Why has the white car never been traced? I could go on and on.......

I am a great believer in life after death - so those 'murderers' had better watch out!!!!!!!! You are a long time dead!!!!

Kay Hayden

REPLY: You raise some questions Kay, but I'll be looking to the Inquest for some real evidence. (Ed)
