- Breakfast With the Queen

IT’S NOW CLEAR the Queen has never been on an MBA course.

Her Majesty is good at a lot of things, such as making small talk at banquets and providing an entertaining cast of soap opera characters in the shape of her children, but a business-head she ain’t.

An undercover reporter infiltrated the Queen’s staff recently and managed to serve her breakfast, among other servant-type duties. Some people were shocked to learn that such a responsible position should command a salary of only UKP11,000 per annum, roughly half the average wage in London.

But I think they’ve missed the point. If, like me, you spend too much of your precious life watching inane TV shows which feature the talents of minor-celebrities, you will be familiar with the competitions that reward a simple, if crazily expensive, phone call with the chance to eat lunch with, say, Les Dennis. Sometimes these competitions are won by simple auction and they often fetch hundreds of thousands of pounds.

If these no-mark celebs can whip up that kind of cash, imagine what Her Majesty is capable of. People from all over the world would pay millions for the privilege of spreading butter and marmalade on the royal toast. They’d mortgage their houses for the chance to iron and deliver the morning paper on the off chance the Queen would ask for advice on clue 3 down in the crossword. She’d solve all her financial worries at a stroke and be able to afford a new hat.

Rock and Pop

- Bob Goes Rock
Dylan @ Wembley Arena
, 15 November 2003
The last couple of times I've seen Dylan he's been pushing out a country-fied Nashville sound. That's no bad thing for me for as regulars will know I'm something of a country nut. Last Saturday at Wembley Arena - yeah I got these tickets before the cooler gigs at Brixton and Shepherd's Bush were announced - rats! - Bob kicked off in this Tennessee style with a twangy Maggie's Farm. Then his two hour set gradually rocked up.

By the end of the gig the Freewheelin' Bob had juiced up and landed somewhere pretty close to the rockiest performance I've yet to see him deliver. The good thing about seeing Dylan live is that surprises like this are par for the course. Unless you're well versed with his back catalogue, you'll often struggle to even recognise classics lsuch as Like A Rolling Stone until half way through. But I like that. Even with his never-ending tour he still keeps us guessing.

Dear LondonNet,

Your wewbsite dated Wednesday November 19th quite clearly advised under the 'From Fri Nov 14' column that the film "Love Actually" was showing at Bexleyheath Cineworld (13th film down the list).

Acting on this information, my wife and I went to the Cinema where to our annoyance we were told that the film was not showing until Friday 21st November.

Because of the error on the web page my wife and I had a wasted eight mile round trip which ruined our evening.

I really cannot understand how such a mistake was allowed to be posted on a web page which must be used by many people when arranging a night out.

Perhaps a little more care would not be remiss for the future!

Mr. John Pridmore

REPLY:Thanks for the feedback John. I regret to hear that you attended a phantom screening following use of our listings.

We've had a look at the page and the entry was as follows:
Love Actually (15)
Progs Sun 7.20pm, 8.00pm; Thu 12.30pm, 1.10pm, 3.30pm, 4.20pm, 6.30pm, 8.00pm

This means that the show times are for screenings on Sunday and Thursday only, so as you attended on Wednesday the film would not have been showing. Big films like Love Actually are often shown at selected cinemas across London on certain days in the week leading up to their full theatrical release. For the week commencing Friday 21 November Love Actually will be shown every night as it is now on full release.

We have had a review of the way we present the listings in response to your problem (and that of a few others who have had problems with the listings in the same way in the past) and are now going to show the information as follows:

Love Actually (15)
Sun 7.20pm, 8.00pm
Thu 12.30pm, 1.10pm, 3.30pm, 4.20pm, 6.30pm, 8.00pm

For full Beckenham Odeon listings in the new style see:

I hope this helps clarify the situation and rest assured we will keep on monitoring the effectiveness of the listings over the coming months.(Ed)
