2. LONDON DIARY
- Constructing a Crane Future

----------------------------------------

IT’S rare enough that big lumps of metal should find themselves in the headlines but that the said rusty heaps should twice dominate the news agenda is unheard of.

Stranger still, the two construction-site cranes in question were neighbours, both favouring the Tower Bridge area. One was kind enough to hook up with an odd American illusionist for 44 days; the other housed a fathers’ rights campaigner for six.

I’ve always had a secret desire to operate a crane, so I can see the attraction for the world’s publicity seekers. Cranes tower above cities like some kind of superior alien invading force and it is to them we look for clues for how our world will look in the near future.

That said, I couldn’t help being a bit worried about the recent turn of events, especially as each successive stunt seems to become more crane-centric. David Blaine, by means of his Perspex box, kept a discreet distance from the crane proper, but David Chick, the fathers’ rights fellow, climbed most of the way up his one.

The next time this kind of thing happens, watch out for someone (almost certainly called ‘David’ by the looks of things) climbing into the control box and swinging that demolition ball at his enemies. They may look calm and dignified, but don’t push the patience of cranes, is what I’m saying.

Birmingham, England 1978. Eight unemployed wannabe musicians form a band. Reflecting both their situation and attitude they call themselves UB40 (the official code for an unemployment form).

Following six months spent in a Birmingham cellar learning to play, UB40 launched their unique brand of reggae at their first gig on February 9th, 1979. Twenty-four years on and the eight now have no need to worry about signing on the dole. Their back catalogue is rich with some of reggae's most successful tunes. While Bob Marley made reggae popular, UB40 made reggae pop. This is no mean achievement for a band whose three number ones (Red Red Wine, I Got You Babe and Can't Help Falling In Love) make them the UK's most successful reggae act ever.

I spent the mid-eighties in Birmingham. At the time reggae was the sound of the city. And UB40 personified that sound. Too many years down the line and my love of reggae is undiminished. As you lose yourself in a musical style you inevitably spend much of your time wallowing in its roots. For reggae that'll be the sounds of Kingston, Jamaica just about the time when the Wailers met up with Lee 'Scratch' Perry. The 60s and 70s classics aside I've always retained a soft spot for the more popular stuff too, be it Shaggy bellowing It Wasn't Me or UB40's Ali Campbell crooning Kingston Town.

This tour features the band playing old favourites such as One In Ten, The Earth Dies Screaming and Rat In Mi Kitchen plus a selection from their recent albums. Click here for tickets

Dear LondonNet,

Re: Diana

To me, it damages the quality of your email newsletter when you publish the worst of the rants regarding the Diana farce (predicting her own death? Come ON!). You seem little worried about showing how stupid and
ill-educated some of your readers seem to be (can't you edit their comments for at least some of the WORST
typos first?). And some of the theories are school-level in their simplicity - I hope they're a minority.

Otherwise I like the content of your newsletter, but I do wonder about some of my fellow readers...

Thanks,

Mike

REPLY: Fair point Mike. We've been receiving a steady stream of conspiracy theories and condolence messages ever since Diana died in 1997. Normally we try to limit the letters to one per issue or so. Following the publication of Paul Burrell's book 'A Royal Duty' we have been deluged with thousands of new emails and felt it was right to reflect that in the last issue.

We check and edit the more serious letters for punctuation, spelling, etc. With the others there is a balance between perfecting grammar and preserving the (admittedly often inane) spirit of the message.

As to the subject of our readers Mike, yes we're happy to cater for the smarter ones like you, but wouldn't life be just that little bit duller without a few of the whackos and weirdos too? (Ed)
