2. LONDON DIARY
- Punk Eyes Rotten Future

----------------------------------------

Have we had a full-on Punk revival yet? If we have, I missed it. Every few years there's an anniversary-excuse for a Beatles greatest hits LP; poor old Elvis is regularly disinterred and half of London's pubs have 70s nights where you can dance to Abba.

But punk is generally left in the realms of legend. I know there have been groups that borrow attitudes and guitar styles from the late 70s glory days - skater-punk and the like - but what I mean is a retrospective eulogising of the original bands, complete with publicity machine and tacky merchandise.

Things might be about to change with the news that John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten lead singer of Sex Pistols, is to make a film based on his mad autobiography, Rotten: No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs. There have been other films about the punk experience before, of course. Lydon/Rotten himself starred in The Great Rock and Roll Swindle, for instance. But these have usually been minor or cult affairs.

This time round, it could be different. Penelope Spheeris, the director of Wayne's World, is working on the Rotten project suggesting it's at least going to get some sort of studio push. Rotten has never been slow in chasing the money, either. Add on the fact that the generation who were punks 25 years ago are now in charge of the companies that do the merchandising and sponsorship deals and we have a recipe for a real punk party.

Stand by for kids' meals featuring chicken-flavoured pools of vomit, mini-black studded belts and a range of spikey-haired soft-dolls that say 'I am an anti-christ' when you pull their nose-ring.

3. ENTERTAINMENT
----------------------------------------

THEATRE

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
http://www.londonnet.co.uk/ln/out/ent/theatre.html

Going to the West End regularly, one learns a thing or two. Like the
superiority of castlists over programmes, for example. Theatreland maverick
Cameron Mackintosh may have produced some luscious musicals, but he also is
in the business of churning out the same pile of adverts with a different
cover for every show.

Whether it's the brilliant Bombay Dreams or the frightening Phantom Of The
Opera, these expensive programmes feature the same interviews with the same
old drama queens. For the short of cash, the repeated list of Lloyd Webber's
foody hang outs can also get a bit bland.

Fortunately, Sir Cameron is not too proud to take the lead from the Royal
Shakespeare Company and the National. As a thrifty alternative, he supplies
a single sheet offering the who-plays-who-low-down. So if all you're after
is the name of some fine thesp, then don't part with a penny.

Dear LondonNet,

Re: Mother Teresa v Diana

In all the condolences you send, do you remember the saint of those oppressed? Mother Teresa died in that same week. Where were the remembrances of her and of her sacrificial work for the Church? Do you remember her?

Name supplied

REPLY: Yes we do. But Diana has a kind of London connection you see. And hey we are LondonNet. Geddit.(Ed)
