2. LONDON DIARY
- London's Burning With Sunshine Now

----------------------------------------

Last Sunday was a big day for London.

Down at Heathrow Airport a bunch of weather wallahs watched with glee as the mercury rose up to notch Britain's highest ever recorded temperature. Yes, after a hundred and thirty years of diligent weather watching we finally made it to 100F (37.9C). The capital's moment of glory would be brief though. Later that day plucky little Gravesend in Kent pipped us to the post with a reading of 101F (38.1C).

Nevertheless our meteorological blip whipped the no-news Sunday news rooms into a frenzy. Ice lollies for the animals in London Zoo... Proof for global warming... London hotter than Rio...

Hold on a minute. London hotter than Rio? So on a record hot day in London we should do the samba because we can wallop a southern hemisphere beach city in the middle of its winter? It's not only Andrew Gilligan who's been slack checking his facts then.

Thankfully the excess heat has now receded and we're left with a sunny afterglow. So skip the Med and come do your sunbathing in London instead. No umbrella required.

3. ENTERTAINMENT
----------------------------------------

THEATRE

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
http://www.londonnet.co.uk/ln/out/ent/theatre.html

The Edinburgh festival is off to a more than usually daring start, with a
rush of risk-taking shows all anxious for a London transfer.

Theatre O’s ingenious new show turns a critical eye on contemporary values.
The lightness of touch with which this company explores the
self-destructiveness of modern life keeps their work both entertaining and
thought provoking, and The Argument’s focus on a family under pressure
affords the perfect opportunity for the four strong cast to showcase their
talent for ensemble work. Absurdist yet accessible, their study in how we
hurt the ones we love is a bittersweet delight.

SPID theatre company’s Bluebeard’s Wives also deserves a run in the capital.
Taking inspiration from the tale of the wife forbidden to explore her
husband’s castle, this experimental drama redefines the use of film on
stage. Developed at the Institute of Contemporary Art, this reworking of
Grimms’ fearful fairytale boasts a provocative fusion of dance, film and
sound. Theatreland looks set for a shake up.

Hi,

I've lived in and around London all of my life and I think your website is excellent. I'm going to try out one of the retro clubs I found in your listings that I didn't know existed. If it's good I'll try a few more!

Keep up the good work!!

Dear LondonNet,

Re: UCG West India Quay,

We love going to the above cinema, as we live in Lewisham, and it means that we have a lovely relaxing journey to and from West India Quay. It is also pleasant because it tends to be less crowded, which the North Greenwich cinema isn't.

On August 11th at 6pm, we went to see Respiro. We were rather disappointed to be told that there would be no aircon at all in cinema 8. The screening wasn't too full as it happens, but it did feel a little uncomfortable before the end of the film. It would have been nice to have offered cinema-goers a cheaper ticket, because of the lack of aircon, or at least a free bottle of water.

Thank you

Nana Anto-Awuakye

REPLY: Seems like the airconditioning was only unavailable in screen 8 from what you're saying. We imagine that from time certain screens have problems. Generally though modern cinemas offer a diverting way to escape the heat as most are now comfortably chilled. Sorry to hear that the blower was not on for your visit.
