2. LONDON DIARY
- London Can’t Lose at the Olympics

----------------------------------------

LONDONNERS have reacted with a curious mixture of suspicion and
embarrassment to the news that their city is to bid to host the 2012 Olympic
Games.

The suspicion is based on the tax implications of spending several billions
of pounds building the venues and infrastructure to hold the games. As a
minimum, taxpaying Londoners will each have to shell out UKP20 a year if
London is chosen as host.

This tax proposal comes at a sticky time as most taxpayers in the capital
have only recently been handed a big local hike, up to 30 per cent in some
places. Nevertheless, Olympic backers have been miffed by the reaction against the tax scheme, as they had hoped that UKP20 would seem a small price to pay compared to the potential kudos and glory on offer.

That’s where the trouble lies, I think. A lot of people are worried that,
with the experience of the Dome and Wembley stadium still strong in the
imagination, London will muck it up and be landed with one of the most
expensive portions of egg on your face in history.

To me, that’s exactly what makes the Olympics a fool proof idea. If it all
goes well, as the government says, we’ll have a great carnival event for a
month; if it all goes wrong, as long as it does so in spectacular style, the
London Olympics will be talked and laughed about for years to come. Even the
Mayor’s new tourist boss couldn’t arrange that kind of on-going,
good-humoured publicity.

THEATRE

In The Spotlight
http://www.londonnet.co.uk/ln/out/ent/theatre.html#spotlight
Though visual theatre has finally gate crashed the West End, nothing stops
actors opening their mouths. The provocative phenomenon of ‘Jerry Springer,
The Opera’ is a case in point. This devised opera started at the BAC and
ended at the National, defying the notion of pre-scripting by loquaciously
satirising talk shows and all that talking involves.

The Lion King is another example of non-text based theatre making strong use
of puppetry and dance rather than relying on a script. Having extended its
booking period by a further six months until next March 28, the Disney
blockbuster still wowing the Lyceum Theatre ingeniously uses props and song
instead of just words in order to bring animals to life.

These two surprise hits share a preference for the sheer physicality of
movement over dialogue. ‘What the actors say is probably a lie, but what the
music says is real,’ says Stuart Lee, the creator of ‘Jerry Springer, the
Opera’.

MUSIC
http://www.londonnet.co.uk/ln/out/music/

Rock and Pop

- Elton John, Wembley Arena, 5th Dec 2003
Hot on the heals of the massive 3 x platinum selling album Elton John Greatest Hits 1970-2002, which has sold over 1 million copies so far, Elton is back with a bang with his spectacular show featuring all of the classic hits including Your Song, Bennie and the Jets, Crocodile Rock, Rocket Man as well as the latest hits from his multi-platinum selling album Songs From The West Coast, I Want Love, This Train Don't Stop There Anymore and Ballad of the Boy In The Red Shoes.

- Bruce Springsteen, Crystal Palace, 26-27 May 2003
Following The Boss' one off UK show in 2002 (which was his first in some years to see him reunited with the E Street Band), he returns to the UK for a full on stadium tour. 2002 also saw the release of 'The Rising', Bruce's first album to feature the full band since Born in the USA and his first album of completely new material in a few years.
Doors open at 4pm with Bruce taking the stage at 7.30pm. There is no support.
- Ticket Update: There are still a few tickets left for the Boss's Monday (26 May) show at Crystal Palace. The Tuesday (27 May) show still has good availability.

- The Libertines, Forum, 25th June 2003
The Libertines have been stirring it up big time in the last twelve months with their unique distillation of inebriated squat rock, earning themselves any number of next big thing plaudits in the process. Although finding themselves lumped into the currently hip garage rock scene, the only thing The Libertines' have in common with bands such as The Strokes and The Hives is having a 'The' in their title - their sound being a roughly mixed cocktail of particularly British influences which, although on the one hand sounding like nothing else around, has you racking your brains trying to figure out exactly who you can equate them with.
