2. LONDON DIARY
- The New Milky Way

----------------------------------------

BRITAIN is one of the few countries still to have door to door milk
deliveries. Thousands of brave men and women drive funny little electric
carts around our streets early in the morning in a laudable bid to get the
day off to a healthy and humorous start.

Sadly, in recent years, the milk-delivery business has been going down hill,
as more and more people have chosen to get their dairy supplies from
supermarkets, which are usually cheaper.

Market analysts predicted the milk round would die a slow death. But a kiss
of life arrived this week in the form of an agreement under which milk
deliverers will now be able to bring the post to our doors.

That doesn't represent such good news for postal workers, of course, many of
whom face the sack over the next year or so. There could be a way to keep
everyone happy, however.

Redundant post people could get together with their electrified mates and
help deliver both mail and milk. That way, both could finish early and
moonlight on another job - maybe start up as freelance junk mail collectors.

3. ENTERTAINMENT
----------------------------------------

THEATRE
http://www.londonnet.co.uk/ln/out/ent/theatre.html

- In the spotlight
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the Full Monty, My Fair Lady - the West End has
definitely gone to the movies. These days film posters clutter the stage and
theatre producers serve up dramatic reworks of plots already seen on the big
screen.

But Andrew Lloyd Webber's latest works to a slightly different formula.
Thoroughly Western in its story telling, Bombay Dreams nonetheless pays
tribute to the magical world of Bollywood. What's more, the rule breaking
musical has been packing in a vibrant mixed audience despite tepid reviews.

Webber's successful experiment charts the making of a Bollywood film. Scenes
showing the film in rehearsal set the tone of this East meets West hybrid,
and what the show lacks in wet saris it makes up for in naughty jokes.
Preeya 'Bend it like Beckham' Kalidas gives a particular spicy performance
in the lead, supported by hot numbers from a talented cast. If you think it
feels like an Indian Summer outdoors, try watching these guys on stage.

CLUBS
http://www.londonnet.co.uk/ln/out/ent/clubs.html

London Skatalites at Po Na Na Souk Bar
- Wednesdays (10pm - 2am)
20 Church Street Kensington W8
http://www.ponana.co.uk

Most club-goers will feel the urge to let out a primal yelp once they
descend the stairs into the Po Na Na Souk Bar. Go ahead, no one will mind.

Dark except for candle-lit tables surrounded by leopard print couches set
into every wall corner, this bar's African decor resonates a comfortable
appeal. Mirrors placed along wall archways make the undersized party space
seem larger. Be careful not to mistake it for a room entrance when you've
had one drink too many.

Although the couches may be comfy, the funky upbeats coming from the dance floor will get your head nodding, then your foot tapping, until you just can't take it anymore and retreat to the dance floor. Referred to as "break beat," the music spinned by the London Skatalites give a modern, yet mellowed techno feel. Not the easiest music to dance to, don't feel too intimidated by the unabashed girl dancing at the front; she could be a Skatalite groupie. If you feel like getting a little closer to someone, the small dance floor allows for intimate mingling. Who knows? You may get some digits at the end of the night.

This small, non-crowded and laid-back venue is a great place to hook-up with
anyone you fancy, native or foreigner. You can choose to lounge like a
leopard or yelp like a hyena on the dance floor. With free entry, you just
can't go wrong. Drinks are reasonably priced and mixed strongly, which will
help with your yelping.

Threadneedles
- Reviewed by David Clee

Any hotel that offers internet access from all its rooms knows how to move
with the times, although the Threadneedles's Georgian decor also respects
the past. For fitness fanatics, gym passes are also available for the local
fitness club.

As any Monopoly player knows, Mayfair is a prime location. Just off Berkeley
Square, the Threadneedles is around the corner from Buckingham Palace and
West End Theatres.

Double and family suites come with all mod cons including TV with cable and
a digital alarm clock. If you want the added luxury of a CD player and fresh
flowers, plump for the deluxe suite. But for those keener on business than
pleasure, there are rooms complete with desk and swivel chair. Secretarial
support is available.

The chef at the hotel's award winning romantic restaurant relishes special
requests. For a less formal affair, try afternoon tea in the wood-panelled
library or snacks in the bar to the tune of live piano music. The
conservatory is the hotel's most peaceful dining area. High-ceiled meeting
and conference halls with a maximum capacity of 200 people are available.
Staff are happy to organise any kind of break, whether it's for fitness, ice
cream or elevenses.

6. COMPETITIONS
----------------------------------------

MYSTERY CLUB TICKETS
- The guy who organises the competitions is off sick this week. So instead
of the long standing tradition of letting you know what prize you might
receive if you win we thought it might be funky to add a bit of mystery to
the proceedings. Cynics among you might say it's because I haven't a clue
which of the tickets on his desk are set for this week's lottery. I'd prefer
to think we've taken competitions onto a whole new plane.

Question: Name the hapless dog with a heart who has a penchant for mystery
solving and whose latest yarn is currently showing in London cinemas?

HOW TO ENTER: All you have to do to enter is send an email with the correct
answer and subject header "Mystery Compie" to:
mailto:[email protected]
NB Include email, telephone number and postal address (which will only be
used for this compie-guaranteed). If you don't include your details we can't
send you info about the prize!

RULES and INFO: First 3 correct answers out of the Editor's hat win the
prize, details will be sent to the winners. The Editor's decision is final.
Closing Date: 31 July 2002

Dear LondonNet,

Could you please let me know if the tours of the houses of parliament that
you are advertising for the summer recess, include a tour of Big Ben. If so
could you please let me know the availability for the following dates
Saturday 3rd August and Sunday 4th August 2002.

Thank-you

Fiona Cameron

Ed: Official tours of the Palace of Westminster, home to the House of
Commons, House of Lords and Big Ben. Tours last through the summer recess
from Sat 3rd August through to 28 September 2002. Availability is good for
most dates.

As to Big Ben, we don't think so, the blurb we have says: "During the Summer
Recess the Palace of Westminster, home to the House of Lords and the House
of Commons is open for a one hour guided tour, which includes both Chambers
and other great State Rooms. The tour starts at Victoria Tower and ends in
Historic Westminster Hall."

Dear Sir,

Having Recently applied for a place at Alchemea college of audio
engineering, I am finding accommodation a bit of a problem. I am looking for
some cheap digs just to put my head down, possibly as close to the college
as possible. I would be very grateful for any information you could provide
either to this.

Many Thanks

Stephen Rowe

REPLY: For short term accommodation check our approved hostels (all year)
and university accommodation (vacation only). Once you are in London best
bet is to read the classifieds in local papers and Loot (also available
online). It makes sense to be here in town though as you need to see the top
places first before someone else snaps them up.(Ed)
