2. LONDON DIARY
- Arrows, Punks and Police

----------------------------------------

I'VE always considered darts a fundamentally British pastime, as well as the
ideal game for drinkers to prove to themselves that they are not drunk by
performing astonishing mental arithmetic feats.

People who don't want to swap small-talk in American bars play pool and
silently compare baseball-cap rim lengths, I believed. But I was wrong. In
New York last week, I happened upon an ordinary bar with a fully-functioning
dart board. Stranger still, it was lorded over by a young man who was keenly
aware of the game's roots and had obviously decided to reveal that sense of
history via his clothing. He wore a deer-stalker hat, smoked a pipe and
paraded around the oche (the line from which the dart player must launch his
arrows) in what he probably considered a smoking jacket but which was, in
fact, a kimono hand-me down from David Carradine in his kung-fu fighting
days.

To get the full incongruity of the moment, you should know that on his head,
our friend sported an orange Mohican 'Punk's Not Dead' haircut. He was also
probably the worst dart player ever to lay his hands on the scared tungsten,
but this mattered not as such was the confidence bestowed by the English pub
pose that he was soon surrounded by a group of women, all eager to bask in
the fake-historic aura.

Not all reactions are reversible, however. When I popped into my local pub
the other night, sporting nothing but gridiron helmet, cowboy boots and
pantyhose, the only attention I received was from the police, who had
clearly not heard of cultural cross-fertilisation.

3. ENTERTAINMENT
----------------------------------------

THEATRE
http://www.londonnet.co.uk/ln/out/ent/theatre.html

In the spotlight
- Better than Bollywood? Gangsterland comes to life? Cars fly? Yes, you are
reading the theatre listings for three smash hit theatre shows - but most of
them sound like film plugs.

Bollywood Dreams, Garagin Way and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang are just some of
the current stage hits owing a lot to cinema. Back in the day film producers
were on the look out for successful stage stuff . Now it seems even theatre
buff Lloyd Webber would rather adapt a movie.

And Webber's not alone with his Bollywood dreams. Well may musicmeisters
like Mackintosh and mates feel threatened by the likes of the Pet Shop Boys,
Boy George and Queen. The musicals of these rock-pop gurus carry cult clout.

So no one's blaming playwright Peter 'Bones' Straughan for his tall tale of
small time crooks in a porn cinema. Or Royal Shakespeare Company director
Adrian Noble for his freelancing fun with the West End's Chitty Chitty Bang
Bang . I just hope he doesn't make the RSC stage Shakespeare In Love.

Dear LondonNet,

Melanie, who offered no theory, is exactly the kind of person the likes of
M16...and other more obscure and elite forces love. Why? Because it's people
like her who can never see anything out of the ordinary. If it isn't
presented to them on a plate...or more likely on the front of a newspaper,
then by golly, it surely does not exist. So there!

I do not know for sure if Princess Diana died from suspicious circumstances,
but judging from the circumstances in which people of certain power, whether
they be political of emotional have died in the past, I would not be
surprised if it were to be proved that she was indeed killed.

My theory? Journalists were paid to hound her that night and the driver
somehow persuaded, perhaps against his will, to crash the car. One way or
the other, it was not an accident. The likelihood of the person/s who wanted
her dead being someone directly connected to the Royal family is minimum in
my opinion. The Royal family did not kill her. Someone in Government? I
don't doubt it. Anyway, no one will ever know for sure. It was well planned,
and fully fixed so that no one would know what went on.

Esther C Donaldson

REPLY: You don't miss any tricks, eh, Esther? (Ed)

----------------------------------------

Dear Ahoy!

My conspiracy theory is just this: She was chased and the driver lost
control because he was under the influence or speeding, after all speed
kills! The conspirator is God or Fate!

Kym

REPLY: How kooky... (Ed)
