In Full
Trevor Nunn's Olivier
award-winning production of Anything Goes comes to the Theatre Royal
Drury Lane from October 24. His version of Cole Porter's musical
replaces Nunn's previous hit, My Fair Lady, which producer Cameron
Mackintosh confirmed as closing August 30.
Anything Goes was written by PG Wodehouse in 1934 for lyrics by
Cole Porter. The tale of the ship sailing from New York to England
focuses on an unusual group of passengers, including a gangster,
a debutante and her mother, a nightclub singer, a wealthy New York
businessman and his stowaway assistant. When the debutante turns
out to be the stowaway's long-lost love, he sets about winning her
back. Mean time her mother struggles to maintain her social status
and the gangster strives to escape the law.
The musical sold out at the National Theatre where it played for
three and a half months until March. Upon quitting the National
Theatre earlier this year, Nunn cited Anything Goes as the favourite
musical of his career. 'You don't strike a chord this emphatically
that often,' he said.
