The Comedy Store

Long established, yet still with a reputation for original and anarchic acts. Nearly two decades ago "The Store’s" players practically invented alternative comedy here. Those were heady post-punk days, now "The Store" is a mainstream institution. Many fine young comedians get their first big break here, playing in front of a rowdy and "interactive" audience.

Our Review:
Venue: The Watershed, Wimbledon
Comedy Night: Every Friday, 8-10pm

Walk along Wimbledon Broadway, and you could easily miss this little venue, but tucked away just opposite the Polka theatre sits The Watershed. Although, most evenings this place is used in its main capacity as a night club, the Laughing Horse hosts a comedy night every Friday with resident compere Kevin McCarron on hand to warm up the crowd.

As luck would have it, when the LondonNet team went along to see what all the fuss was about we ended up slap bang in the middle of the front row. Needless to say it was the prime location for having the right royal piss taken, but hey we could handle it - which was more than can be said for the inebriated loon sat next to us...If you don't fancy all that audience participation, make sure you assume position at least half way back or grab a subtle corner location. A front row view will invariably guarantee that you become the butt of a few jokes, and if you've overdosed on alcohol, prepare to be truly pummeled with insults as you become woefully disillusioned with your own level of searing wit.

The highlight of the evening had to be comedian Greg Davies. The self-confessed "giant freak" loomed over the crowd at a quite astonishing six foot eight. Funnily enough, the only person throwing "vertically enhanced" jokes into the air was the giant freak himself. Bearing in mind that he was of great stature, and coupled with the fact that the crowd were somewhat disabled by belly-aching laughter, his set was unsurprisingly heckle-free. Amongst the other acts, Andrew O’neil & Tom Rigglesworth seemed to simultaneously amuse and baffle the audience with their surreal humour, whilst Mark Fellgate closed the night with his increasingly popular ventriloquism act.

If you still have room for more after the comedy slot finishes, The Watershed converts back to it’s club layout until 2am. The chic look and feel of the club cozily accommodates two bars, and separate lounge and dance floor areas. Cocktails will set you back a mere UKP 2 a glass, whilst a pitcher is around the heftier UKP 14 mark. Of course, you could always get tanked up before you get there, but beware the razor sharp comebacks...
